Senior Backend Engineer (Crypto Data Pipeline)

About the Role

CoinGecko is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join our Data Pipeline team. You will design, build, and maintain the systems that ingest, normalize, and serve cryptocurrency market data from 1,000+ exchanges and 13M+ tokens to millions of users worldwide.

Responsibilities

• Design and build high-throughput data ingestion pipelines for real-time market data (price, volume, order books).
• Own the reliability and observability of critical data services with SLO-driven monitoring.
• Optimize storage and query patterns across PostgreSQL, ClickHouse, and Redis for sub-100ms public API latency.
• Partner with the API team to expose new data products to enterprise customers.
• Conduct code reviews, mentor mid-level engineers, and contribute to engineering standards.
• Participate in on-call rotation (1 week every 6 weeks) for the data platform.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional backend engineering experience.
• Strong proficiency in Ruby on Rails or Go (we use both).
• Hands-on experience operating data pipelines at scale (Kafka, Airflow, dbt, or equivalent).
• Solid SQL and database performance tuning experience (PostgreSQL preferred).
• Experience with AWS (EKS, RDS, MSK, S3) or an equivalent cloud platform.
• Comfortable with distributed systems trade-offs around consistency, availability, and latency.

Nice to Have

• Prior experience with cryptocurrency, blockchain, DeFi, or financial market data.
• Contributions to open-source data tooling.
• Experience with observability stacks (Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog).
